Petrified Wood Somdej Buddha Amulets Description

A young Theravada Buddhist monk at Buddhist Temple, Wat Lahn Kuat, holding a block of brown petrified wood - millions of years old. This is the same wood our Somdej Toh amulets are made out of.

Somdej Toh originally created a number of Buddha amulets with a very unique style that has been in demand for scores of years. As a tribute and because the style is so lovely, monks of modern times recreate the style and add their own ideas. This Somdej style Buddha representation is just like one of the original Somdej styles. However, the lotus shaped amulet is different. Why a lotus? The lotus symbolizes essential pureness of the body, speech, and thoughts (mind). Though it grows out of muddy water, the lotus flower grows spectacularly vivid and bright. As water falls on the long lotus petals, it is said to symbolize easy detachment because the water rolls right off and back to the water below. Eight of the amulets below have on the reverse side an inscription that reads, "Wat Lahn Kuat" and the date, either 47 or 48. This is in Buddhist years, so 2548 corresponds to the Christian year of 2005. Year 2559 is 2016. These amulets were crafted during those years.

WHY BUDDHISTS BUY SOMDEJ TOH STYLE AMULETS?

The reason for the popularity of Somdej Toh amulets deserves an entire page of history. There is probably no more highly sought after style of amulets than Somdej Toh amulets here in Thailand. The reason is that the power of luck and good fortune from people with these amulets is staggering. Everyone seems to have a story about their amulet, and once they rent one - they don't tend to ever relinquish it. Somdej amulets are passed down through history from father to son or daughter... and so on.
