If there is one venerable monk that has even more followers than all the other monks – it is Thailand’s most respected monk, Phra Somdej Toh.

Phra Somdej Toh is from a temple called, “Wat Rakhang Kositararm” His Thai amulets are so revered that nearly everyone that takes amulets seriously in Thailand has one good one – meaning, one expensive Somdej amulet that is full of power and good luck, protection for the wearer of this amulet.

In full, this monk’s name reads – “Somdej Phra Puttajarn Toh Phrom-rangsri” and some people for short will call him “Somdej Toh” which is also respectful (and easier to remember). Somdej Toh is a son of one of Thailand’s royalty, King Rama the 2nd and mother, Nang Ngud which lived in the Thailand province of Kamphangpet.

Somdej Toh was born before his father became the King of Thailand. At the early age of 13 Somdej took the vowels of monkhood and became a monk (boo-ut, in Thai). At the age of twenty-one he became a senior monk who was very keen with Buddhist teachings. He was given the name “Maha Toh”, or, “King’s monk”. Some people still refer to his sacred Thai amulets by this same name.

After his father was King he received the wat Rakang Kositaram during King Rama IV. Somdej moved up through the ranks and finally received the ultimate title of Somdej Phra Puttajarn Toh in the year of 1872. This meant he was at the highest level of monkhood.

Soon after this Phra Somdej began making his own style of Thai Buddha amulets during year of the Buddha 2406 for about nine years (1863 to 1872 in western years). These amulets became very famous and were called “Somdej Wat Rakhang” Buddhist amulets. Today these amulets fetch extremely high prices in the millions of Thai Baht.

Originally the Somdej amulets were made by hand by this respected monk. Eventually molds were made for the amulet styles and the first batch were not that well made so a goldsmith for the King created new molds which worked much better and became the standard for all the amulets.

In his life time, Somdej Toh made around 84,000 Phra Somdej amulets.

There are many varied substances that went into making these famous amulets. Some of them were: lime (from crushed seashells), Phong Vises (sacred powder of unknown origin), flower leaves, rice bits, luts, ashes from cremated urns, honey, and later – tang oil on the advice of a palatial goldsmith- which made the surface beautiful.

Phra Somdej was and excellent orator and with high intelligence. He was a very compassionate monk, and was known to go out of his way for people that he could help. Phra Somdej didn’t stop at just the one version of Thai amulet – he created 73 different styles of amulet!

As far as Thai amulets go in Thailand there is none more famous, more widely known across the globe, and none more powerful than the Somdeg Wat Rakhang amulets he originally made so many years ago. There are whole businesses in Bangkok built around these amulets and nearly every Thai Buddhist that wears amulets has a Phra Somdej replica at least because it’s the most respected and powerful of all the clay, metal, or any substance amulets.

Somdej’s amulets were given greater power by the recitation of chants he said while in the presence of the amulets he made. The chants he used were enormously powerful and he learned them from the great Buddhist monks of the past.

It is said that Phra Somdej’s amulets are very powerful – and keep their power forever because of the technique he learned for filling them with power…

First the sacred yan numbers were applied – then the katha (chants) were said over and over and the last part is the meditation – which many monks neglect to do n these times. These amulets hold their power nearly forever – it is very hard for them to lose their strength and virility.

It is said that Phra Somdej Toh made the amulets to help the world come to know Buddhism and to give good karma for the world, not himself. Keepers of the amulets today receive many blessings because Somdej didn’t act selfishly when making the amulets.

If you can find yourself an original Somdej amulet today you are assured great fortune and protection from every evil. These are the highest class amulets that exist in Thailand today. Some of the amulets are for sale at the amulet market by the river in Bangkok. Others are held by private interests and are not for sale. High level politicians, policemen, and movie stars in Thailand own original Phra Somdej Toh amulets.

We hope you enjoyed that overview of the highest class amulets you can buy in Thailand.

The Phra Somdej Toh amulet you see at the top of this page can be found on this page of our Thai Buddha amulets:

It’s a rare day when Ajarn Jumnien returns to his home temple. He is a very busy abbot, and constantly traveling the world to give meditation courses. For the most part he is staying at a temple in Ratchaburi these days.

We are glad to have him back at Wat Tham Suea for many reasons. He will be there for 3 days and then go to Phuket to a Buddhist temple there for a day trip and return to Wat Tham Suea in Krabi for a short time.

Ajarn Jumnien is a strong believer in the power of amulets. He is generous with them – giving them away to people he meets daily at the temples. He carries a number of amulets attached to his monk robe – 20 or more. He also has some in his pockets to give away.

If you haven’t visited Wat Tham Seua in Krabi province – near Krabi town, you should make it a point to do so. There are a number of unique things to see – including caves where the monks live; a foothills area; a mountain to climb (1237 steps) and numerous statues and amulet shops – all amulets are blessed by this Thai abbot himself, or they are not sold.

We have been working on another solution to help customers have another way to pay for the Thai amulets and other Buddhist items we have for sale here.

We’ll let you know as things develop. Some of our customers have asked that we provide credit card only processing… and, being in Thailand that is easier said than done. We don’t want to go with a Thai credit card processor so we’ll be going with someone based in the states or UK, possibly Australia or Canada even. We think there is a large percentage (25% ?) that want to pay without using your current paypal account or wanting to sign up for a new PP account.

We want it for you – whatever way is convenient really. We hope we can enable some alternative forms of payment in the near future. Stay tuned if you’ve thought about purchasing our Thai amulets but haven’t wanted to pay with PP.
Thanks,

The other day at the temple we decided to buy a lot of new gold and silver Buddhist (Buddha, Kwan Yin, Ganesh, Luang Phor Tuad, Luang Phor Klai, Bit Tar) amulets before we move to a new part of Thailand. We cleaned house! The nuns there that sell the amulets were so happy to sell so many at a time… They know we give 10% of what we make back to the temple so they were especially excited.
We bought a number of Thai amulets we haven’t offered before and we’re hoping they’ll sell. We put prices at fair numbers so we can make a happy-happy-happy between you, the temple, and ourselves. So far so good – we’ve sold Thai Buddist amulets to 24 countries so far!

We’ll take photos of the new Buddha amulets in the next few days and get to work building out the site to accomodate about 14 new types of amulets including some totally different designs.

Stay tuned… if you have any questions about amulets we can get for you – just ask.

Thanks!

When held in a bright light – especially the sun – the Buddha radiates a luminescent glow because of the pearly finish on this blessed talisman.

I provided a couple photos of the front to help show the detail and the real gold color of the case – since it’s hard to get both in the same image. (Click image to see sales page)

The back side is a jedi (chedi) which is usually a tall monument Thais kneel in front of to pray (5+ meters high).

This is one of our favorite talismans and one that we give as gifts to those close to us. The pearly finish along with the bright gold encasement is nothing short of dazzling. You will LOVE these gold amulets with the pearly finish.

All Talismans are new. After you order we visit the temple to pickup your talisman.

*We give back to Tiger Cave Temple 10% of all money collected.

This blog will be where I post all the new information about Thai amulets we sell at ThaiAmuletSales.com – our main Buddhist amulet-pendant site.

We sell Buddhist, Buddha, Kwan Yin, Ganesh, Luang Phor Tuad, Por Klai, Bit Tar, Ajahn Jumnien and other important Theravada Buddhist monk pendants, amulets, charms, bracelets, yants, stickers and whatever else we find at the temple.

We’re even thinking about transitioning all the amulets we have for sale over to this side of the site where we can sell them in one format. Not sure what’s going to happen. For now we’ll release new amulets here and some will be for sale directly from this blog.

If keeping up to date with new amulets coming out is important to you – bookmark this site, and grab the RSS feed so you can read it in Google Reader or some other RSS reader program.
