Jade (Jadeite) is found in mountains and riverbeds. It is extremely hard
material, nearly as hard as diamond - and in order to carve jade you
must apply a repetitive motion with coarse instruments across the
surface to wear it down to the desired level. Carving jade is extremely
difficult, and originally in China they shaped jade by using sand paste
and rubbing it repeatedly to wear it down. Difficult - right? Today most
of the jade you find in Buddhist jewelry has been made in China. Some of
the amulets below have been made in China, some in Thailand. Jade has a
wide variety of colors and translucence, some of the translucent jade is
seen as being very valuable... but, some of the white jade is also just
as valuable. Thais and Chinese insist that jade is good luck -
especially when fashioned into one of the favored Buddhist dieties -
Buddha, Kwan Yin, Nong Kwak. |
